General description
CD43, also called leukosialin, is expressed on the surface of all leukocytes except for some resting B-cells. It appears to function as an anti-adhesion molecule, mediating repulsion amongst leukocytes. CD43 expression in lymphomas is highly correlated with CD5; thus most T-cell malignancies and a group of small lymphocyte B-cell malignancies [CLL/ SLL, mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), prolymphocytic leukemia] are often positive, while follicular lymphoma (FL) is usually negative. Anti-CD43 is less useful as a lineage marker, but is a sensitive indicator of aberrant B-cell populations. From 70 to 90% of T-cell lymphomas are labeled with this antibody. Plasmacytoma/myeloma and mast cell disease are also labeled with this antibody. No reactivity has been observed with reactive B-cells.
